Galactic Chemical Evolution

چکیده
The primary present-day observables upon which theories of galaxy evolution are based are a system's morphology, dynamics, colour, and chemistry. Individually, each provides an important constraint to any given model; in concert, the four represent a fundamental (intractable) boundary condition for chemody-namical simulations. We review the current state-of-the-art semi-analytical and chemodynamical models for the Milky Way, emphasising the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches.

Nucleosynthesis and Chemical Evolution of Oxygen
Of the elements strictly synthesized in stars, oxygen is by far the most abundantly produced. We review the nucleosynthesis and Galactic chemical evolution of this important element. We then review its isotopic composition in presolar grains recovered from primitive meteorites and from interplanetary dust particles. As we describe, knowledge of these isotopic compositions provide important cons...
متن کاملThe Role of Single Stars of Low and Intermediate Mass in Galactic Chemical Evolution
A short overview is presented of the role that Low and Intermediate mass stars play in Galactic Chemical Evolution; their action affects key elements and isotopes, like deuterium, 3He, 7Li, carbon and nitrogen, and s-process nuclei. In all those cases, critical uncertainties still remain and are briefly discussed here.
متن کاملGalactic Cosmic Rays from Superbubbles and the Abundances of Lithium, Beryllium, and Boron
In this article we study the galactic evolution of the LiBeB elements within the framework of a detailed model of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy that includes galactic cosmic ray nucleosynthesis by particles accelerated in superbubbles. The chemical composition of the superbubble consists of varying proportions of ISM and freshly supernova synthesized material. The observational trends of...
متن کاملChemical evolution of the Milky Way and its Satellites
1 How to model galactic chemical evolution Before going into the detailed chemical evolution history of the Milky Way and its satellites, it is necessary to understand how to model, in general, galactic chemical evolution. The basic ingredients to build a model of galactic chemical evolution can be summarized as : • Initial conditions; • Stellar birthrate function (the rate at which stars are f...
متن کاملInhomogeneous Chemical Evolution of the Galactic Halo: Abundance of r-process Elements
We present a stochastic model based on the Monte Carlo technique to study the inhomogeneous chemical evolution of the Galactic halo. In particular, we consider the local enrichment and subsequent mixing of the interstellar gas resulting from bursts of star formation, following explicitly the fragmentation and coalescence of interstellar gas clouds. The model takes into account the mixing of hal...

Status quo and perspectives of standard chemical evolution models of Local Group galaxies are summarized, discussing what we have learnt from them, what we know we have not learnt yet, and what I think we will learn in the near future. It is described how Galactic chemical evolution models have helped showing that: i) stringent constraints on primordial nucleosynthesis can be derived from the o...
